This Wood was created in 1989 and handed over to Rugby Borough Council by Sainsbury's in 1993.  It is suitable for visitors of all ages and abilities.  The main entrance is on the Dunchurch Road, where a car park is provided.  It is a nature reserve in which many trees, shrubs and wildflowers have been planted to provide food and shelter for birds, butterflies and small mammals.  The large pond was created for dragonflies and other amphibians.  Great diving beetles and water boatman hunt in the water while pond skaters and whirligig beetles speed across the surface.  Click on the inset (right) for a map of the Wood.

From Newton village through to Onley Lane, the Great Central Walk runs for more than four miles through the centre of Rugby.  This walkway follows the former route of the Great Central Railway Line but walkers can now enjoy an abundance of wildlife and conservation areas in peace and tranquility.
Enhancement of this amenity has provided a nature reserve which supports a myriad of different plants, butterflies and birds.  The walk is part of a nature corridor extending from town to countryside.  The site's location provides an ideal opportunity for children and adults to learn more about their local wildlife.  An access ramp for disabled visitors is available at the Ashlawn Road entrance.  Click on the inset (left) for a map of the Great Central Walk.

Newbold Quarry Park is situated off the Newbold Road (B4112) where there is pedestrian access and disabled visitors parking.  The large pool was a former quarry used as a canal reservoir until the light 1980's.  It attracts many water birds such as great crested grebe, swan, moorhen and a range of ducks.  The clean limey water also supports the increasingly rare native crayfish, which look like small lobsters.  There are viewing platforms along the blue lime-rich clay spoilbanks and picnic sites with splendid views.  A car park is provided at Norman Road.  See the inset (right) for a map of the Newbold Quarry Park.
