The First
Women's Rugby World Cup
The first women's Rugby World Cup was held in Wales in April 1991 at the same time as the men's tournament. As a consequence of this the women's World cup was some what overshadowed by the men's World cup and because of this they had a lack of financial support as well the media attention that they needed to help get the women's cup noticed.
12 teams participated in the tournament these included- USA , England, France, USSR, Wales, Japan, Sweden, Spain, Canada, Netherlands, Italy and New Zealand- Divided into four pools of three.
In the final USA beat England 19 - 6, scoring two tries to one, and in the Plate Canada beat Spain 18 - 4.
