It is for one reason alone that Rugby, in the
rural English county of Warwickshire, is known all over the world -
as the birthplace of rugby football - the game to which this
historic market town gave its name. Now a sport played and
appreciated by millions, the game of rugby began on the Close at
Rugby School in 1823 when William Webb Ellis first took the ball in
his arms and ran with it.
There is, however, more to Rugby than just the game. Famous people such as Rupert Brooke, Lewis Carroll and Guy Fawkes have all, at some time, been connected with Rugby. The following pages will give you a flavour of what the Borough of Rugby has to offer. So whether you are passionate about rugby or simply looking for an enjoyable day out, Rugby is the place to visit.
