Percy Carpmael

Percy Carpmael was the inspiration behind the Barbarians a unique, they have no natural home, membership to the club is by invitation only and a philosophy based on adventure and attack.
Percy Loves the culture behind the Rugby tour and came up with
idea of regular short tours involving players of the highest skill levels.
In 1890 he took the Southern Nomads - mainly made up if players from Blackheath - on a tour to the north. In Leuchters Restaurant, Bradford the concept of the Barbarians was agreed on.
The concept took hold over the years and the nearest thing to a club home was a hotel call The Esplanade Hotel in Penarth. This was because this was were the Barbarians always stayed on their Easter tours of Wales.
